Location sharing on Twitter

After much speculation, Twitter has just launched geolocation information for individual tweets, available through Twitter.com.

There has been a lot of talk about it, and many profiles are yet to be able to include location within tweets, but hopefully Twitter should roll it out to everyone in good time!

From both the homepage, and your individual profile, users will be able to view a little blue symbol underneath individual tweets, which when clicked, show the location of the user on a map (powered by Google Maps).

This new feature is already raising some eyebrows, with people commenting that it adds little value to tweets to know where people are, if you are unable to search what is happening around you at any point in time. But is this development a worthwhile one? Adding this feature into the search function would certainly seem to add additional value to the concept.

Earlier this week, Facebook got in on the action, and are expected to launch a similar function in May. It will be interesting to see how these players come up against Foursquare, and how location sharing catches on!

We shall see…
